The exact term "荷花乳鼎壶" is not a widely standardized catalogue name in the published literature, so its precise historical lineage is somewhat ambiguous. Literally it combines "lotus" (荷花) with "乳鼎" — a compound suggesting a ding-like vessel with rounded, nipple- or lobed‑forms — applied to a teapot (壶). Given that, the safest reading is a teapot that marries lotus decoration with a body shaped like a small ding or a lobed (“乳”) vessel.

Historically, Chinese teapot design has long drawn on older vessel types and natural motifs. Ancient bronze ding tripods and later ceramic reinterpretations provided formal templates that potters adapted for use as teapots from the Ming and especially Qing eras onward. Lotus imagery is ubiquitous in Chinese decorative arts, symbolizing purity and Buddhist connotations, and was frequently used on both porcelain and Yixing clay wares. Artisans in Yixing and other kilns invented many hybrid shapes that reference archaic bronzes and floral forms.

Shape note: expect a squat, slightly squat body with rounded lobes or low feet (echoing a ding), lotus‑petal modeling or carving on the surface, a low lid often finished with a bud or petal finial, and a short, balanced spout and handle suitable for gongfu tea service. Materials commonly include Yixing clays or porcelain, depending on production.
Wood-fired handmade Yixing teapot made from Duanni clay sourced from the original Huanglongshan mine. Xu Shun Wei.
