What is Green tea?

Green tea or Lü cha, 绿茶, is the oldest and largest category of Chinese tea. This tea contains a high amount of nutrients and a pure grass-floral flavour, preserved thanks to nuances in the way it is processed.

Green tea is a popular beverage that is made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant. It has been consumed for centuries in China and Japan and is now enjoyed all over the world for its numerous health benefits.

Benefits of green tea:

  1. Rich in antioxidants: Green tea is a rich source of antioxidants such as catechins, which help to protect cells from damage caused by free radicals.

  2. May reduce the risk of chronic diseases: Green tea has been shown to reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer.

  3. May improve brain function: Green tea contains caffeine and the amino acid L-theanine, which can improve brain function and enhance alertness.

  4. May aid weight loss: Green tea may help with weight loss by increasing metabolism and fat burning.

  5. May improve dental health: Green tea contains compounds that can help to reduce the risk of gum disease and cavities.

  6. May reduce the risk of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's: Green tea has been shown to protect neurons and may reduce the risk of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.

These are just a few of the many benefits of green tea. By incorporating green tea into your diet, you can enjoy its delicious taste while reaping its many health benefits.

Green tea is often drunk for its beneficial health properties and its invigorating effect, but also for the flavour. Some varieties have a more umami and creamy flavour, others are characterized more by sweetness, with or without a sour accent.

Green tea is typically brewed at around 80°C, which may take some practice and fine-tuning to personal taste: too cold, and the flavour doesn't develop; too hot, and astringency starts dominating instead.

How to brew green tea

  1. Use high-quality green tea: For the best flavor and aroma, use high-quality loose-leaf green tea instead of tea bags.

  2. Choose the right water temperature: The ideal water temperature for brewing green tea is between 70°C to 80°C. Boiling water or water that is too hot can make the tea taste bitter.

  3. Don't over steep: Over steeping green tea can make it taste bitter. Generally, green tea should be steeped shortly.

  4. Use the right amount of tea leaves: Use 3-4 g of loose-leaf green tea per cup of water, or follow the instructions on the tea package.

  5. Don't use tap water: Use fresh, cold, and filtered water instead of tap water. Tap water may contain impurities that can affect the taste of the tea.

  6. Use the right tea-to-water ratio: The recommended tea-to-water ratio is 3-4 g  of loose-leaf green tea per 100ml of water. Try to steep few times.

By following these rules, you can ensure that your green tea is properly brewed and has the best flavor and aroma.
