Sheng (Raw) Puerhs generally have a toning invigorating effect. As the tea ages the taste becomes milder and rather more interesting.

We do not recommend drinking Raw Puerh in the evening unless you desire to stay awake until morning. This especially applies to younger teas ageg under 15 years.

Sheng puerh is a type of tea that is typically produced in Yunnan province, China. It is made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant and undergoes a unique processing method that sets it apart from other types of tea.

Processing steps of Sheng puerh

  1. Plucking: The first step in making sheng puerh is to pluck the tea leaves from the Camellia sinensis plant. The leaves are typically picked in the spring when they are young and tender.

  2. Withering: The tea leaves are then spread out and left to wither for a few hours. This allows some of the moisture in the leaves to evaporate and makes them more pliable.

  3. Rolling: After withering, the tea leaves are rolled to break down their cell walls and release the enzymes that will cause oxidation. This step is often done by hand, but can also be done mechanically.

  4. Oxidation: The rolled tea leaves are then left to oxidize in a warm and humid environment. During this time, the leaves will darken in color and develop their unique flavor profile.

  5. Drying: Once the leaves have been oxidized to the desired level, they are dried to stop the oxidation process. This can be done by either pan-frying the leaves or using a machine.

Ageing of Sheng pu-erhs

One of the unique aspects of sheng Pu-erh is that it can improve in flavor and complexity with age. As it ages, the tea undergoes a natural fermentation process that changes the flavor and aroma of the tea. This aging process can take many years, and some sheng Pu-erh teas can be aged for decades.

Health benefits of Sheng raw pu erh

In terms of health benefits, sheng Pu-erh is thought to have several potential benefits. For example, it may help support digestive health, reduce inflammation, and lower cholesterol levels.

Some studies have also suggested that Pu-erh tea may have anti-cancer properties, although more research is needed in this area.

Brewing steps for sheng puerh

  1. Heat water: Bring water to a boil and let it cool for a few minutes until it reaches a temperature of around 90-95C.

  2. Rinse the tea: Rinse the tea leaves with hot water to remove any dust or impurities.

  3. Steep the tea: Place the tea leaves in a teapot or gaiwan and add hot water. Let the tea steep for around 5-7 seconds for the first time.

  4. Pour the tea: Pour the tea into a cup or pitcher and enjoy.

  5. Repeat: Sheng puerh can be steeped multiple times, so repeat the brewing process as desired. The flavor and aroma of the tea will change with each steeping.

It's worth noting that sheng Pu-erh is a type of tea that is often enjoyed by tea enthusiasts who appreciate its unique flavor profile and aging potential. However, it may not be as widely available as other types of tea, and it can be more expensive due to the aging process involved in its production.
