rosa ✧ blava × Moychay Barcelona continue Phases of the Moon and the Japanese micro-cycle opened with Ghost in the Shell 2.
The fourth chapter is Paprika (Satoshi Kon, 2006), Kon’s final completed feature and one of the most visually inventive works of Japanese animation of the 2000s.
The film revolves around the DC Mini, a device that allows psychotherapists to enter their patients’ dreams. When several prototypes are stolen, dreams begin to spill into waking reality.
Kon uses animation with extraordinary freedom: spaces transform in seconds, characters move through screens and paintings, genres shift without warning, and editing follows the unstable logic of dreams. At the centre of the film is its delirious parade of dolls, appliances, and musical instruments - an image of the collective unconscious breaking into the everyday world.
Paprika was presented in competition at the Venice Film Festival and later became a frequent point of comparison with Christopher Nolan’s Inception. But Kon’s dream world is far less structured: instead of dividing itself into clear levels, it simply absorbs reality.
For this screening, Moychay Barcelona will continue the Japanese tea program with a new selection chosen for the film.
